What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a condition in which protein-rich fluid accumulates in the tissues. This accumulation of fluid causes swelling. Lymphedema may occur for many reasons including lymph node removal, surgery, radiation treatment, deficiency in the lymphatic system, infection, obesity, injury/trauma, or an unknown cause.

What are the signs and symptoms of lymphedema?

Some signs and symptoms of lymphedema may be present before the onset of visible swelling:

  • A feeling of heaviness or tightness in the arm or leg

  • Discomfort or achiness in the limb

  • Clothing or jewelry becoming too tight

Other signs and symptoms may include:

  • Visible swelling in the affected area which may include arm/leg(s), trunk and/or genitals

  • Recurring infections such as cellulitis

  • Open wounds or seeping from the limb

  • Restricted range of motion of the affected arm or leg

What is the treatment for lymphedema?

Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) performed by a certified lymphedema therapist (CLT), includes manual lymphatic drainage massage (MLD), compression bandaging, exercise program, skin and nail care, compression garment evaluation and fitting, training on self-management of lymphedema. Compression pumps can also assist in the management of lymphedema. Weight loss and a healthy diet are important parts of lymphedema management as well.

Lymphedema is a chronic condition that requires life-long management.
